LANAP Laser Gum Treatment in Beverly Hills: What to Expect in 2026

A practical guide to treatment, candidacy, recovery considerations, evidence, and the questions to ask before deciding.

01

What Is LANAP Laser Gum Treatment?

LANAP stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. It is an FDA-cleared laser-assisted protocol used to treat periodontal disease in appropriate cases. The protocol uses a specialized laser fiber as part of a defined sequence that addresses diseased pocket tissue and bacteria while preserving healthy tissue where clinically possible.

Unlike traditional flap surgery, LANAP does not use conventional scalpel incisions or traditional sutures. That does not make it the right approach for every patient: pocket depth, bone support, anatomy, medical history, smoking, oral hygiene, and prior treatment all influence the recommendation.

At Sterling Periodontics & Implantology on Wilshire Boulevard, Dr. Mohamed Khaled evaluates whether LANAP or another periodontal approach fits the individual clinical findings.

02

How LANAP Differs from Traditional Gum Surgery

Traditional periodontal surgery may use flap access to directly visualize and treat affected root and bone areas. Depending on the defect, the periodontist may reshape, reposition, or graft tissue before closing the area with sutures.

LANAP follows a laser-assisted sequence through the existing periodontal pocket. The protocol uses the laser alongside ultrasonic and hand instruments to address diseased tissue and deposits, then establishes a stable clot at the treated site.

No traditional flap incision
Typically no traditional sutures
Targeted laser-assisted protocol
Case-specific recovery and follow-up

Neither approach is universally superior. Traditional surgery may remain preferable when direct access, reshaping, grafting, or reconstruction is clinically necessary.

03

Who Is a Candidate for LANAP?

LANAP may be considered for patients with periodontal pockets, inflammation, bleeding, bone loss, or persistent disease after initial non-surgical care. A referral after deep-pocket measurements or incomplete response to scaling and root planing can be a reason to seek a specialist evaluation.

Early-stage disease may respond to non-surgical treatment alone. Other situations may require traditional surgery or a regenerative procedure. Diabetes, smoking, medications, medical conditions, anatomy, and home care can affect healing and treatment planning rather than automatically qualifying or disqualifying someone.

A complete periodontal examination and appropriate imaging are the only reliable way to determine candidacy.

04

The LANAP Procedure: What Happens Step by Step

Before the Procedure

Dr. Khaled reviews your concerns, periodontal measurements, clinical findings, health history, and imaging as appropriate. If LANAP is recommended, the written plan explains the treatment scope, sequencing, alternatives, and follow-up before you commit.

During the Procedure

Local anesthesia is used as appropriate. The laser and specialized instruments are used in sequence to address diseased pocket tissue, bacteria, and deposits on the root surfaces. The exact number and length of appointments depend on the areas being treated and the complexity of the case.

After the Procedure

The team provides individualized eating, home-care, activity, and follow-up instructions. Comfort and recovery vary by patient and treatment extent. Ongoing periodontal maintenance remains important because LANAP is part of a long-term periodontal care plan rather than a one-time cure.

05

LANAP Results: What the Research Shows

The LANAP protocol used with the PerioLase MVP-7 has FDA 510(k) clearance for a periodontal-regeneration outcome claim. The FDA summary describes histologic evidence of new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone on previously diseased root surfaces in a prospective human study.

In the small 2012 human histology study, 5 of 10 analyzed teeth showed a degree of periodontal regeneration nine months after LANAP. One showed new attachment and four healed with a long junctional epithelium. The eight-patient study cannot establish an individual success rate or superiority over conventional surgery; the authors called for longer comparative trials. Read the study abstract.

That regulatory clearance and the published evidence do not guarantee regeneration, tooth retention, or a particular result for every patient. The FDA summary itself reports different healing patterns among evaluated sites, which is why diagnosis, case selection, maintenance, and individual health factors remain important.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LANAP laser gum treatment painful?

Local anesthesia is used as appropriate during treatment. Post-treatment comfort varies by patient, disease severity, and treatment extent, and the periodontal team provides individualized instructions.

How long does LANAP take?

Appointment length and the number of sessions depend on how much of the mouth requires treatment and the complexity of the case. Your written plan outlines the expected sequence after evaluation.

Is LANAP covered by dental insurance?

Coverage varies by plan, clinical indication, and the treatment performed. Sterling Periodontics can help review available benefits and provides an individualized written estimate.

How does LANAP recovery compare with traditional gum surgery?

LANAP avoids traditional flap incisions and sutures, which may change the recovery experience for appropriate cases. Recovery still varies, and your periodontist will explain restrictions and follow-up for your treatment plan.

Can LANAP help preserve teeth affected by gum disease?

Preserving teeth is a goal of periodontal care where clinically possible. Whether a tooth can be maintained depends on remaining bone support, disease severity, anatomy, mobility, health factors, and response to treatment.

Who performs LANAP at Sterling Periodontics?

Dr. Mohamed Khaled, a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology with more than 18 years of specialty experience, evaluates and treats LANAP patients at Sterling Periodontics.

What if I have gum disease and also need dental implants?

Active periodontal disease generally needs to be evaluated and addressed as part of implant planning. Dr. Khaled can coordinate the appropriate treatment sequence based on your individual findings.
